4-4-2 formation

The 4-4-2 is the classic football formation: two banks of four with two strikers up front. It is simple to learn, balanced in attack and defense, and still used by top teams today.

How the 4-4-2 works

The back four and the midfield four stay close together, which makes the team hard to play through. The wide midfielders supply crosses and help their full-backs, while the two central midfielders share the work of defending and starting attacks.

Up front, the two strikers work as a pair. A common partnership is one target man who wins headers and holds the ball up, and one quicker striker who runs in behind. When defending, the strikers press the centre-backs or drop in to block passes into midfield.

Strengths

  • Two compact lines of four are hard to break down.
  • Two strikers give a constant threat and a partner for every attack.
  • Every player has a clear job, so the team is easy to organise.
  • Natural width from the wide midfielders, and good cover for the full-backs.

Weaknesses

  • Only two central midfielders, so a team with three can take control of the ball.
  • A number 10 or deep-lying forward can find space between midfield and defense.
  • Wide midfielders must run up and down the touchline all game.
  • Can become predictable if the team relies only on crosses.
