The 3-5-2 uses three centre-backs, two wing-backs and three central midfielders behind a strike partnership. It gives a team control of the middle and two strikers at the same time.
Three centre-backs let the team defend the middle with an extra player, which frees the wing-backs to push high up the pitch. In attack, the wing-backs provide all the width, and the shape can look like a 3-3-4 when they join the strikers.
Without the ball, the wing-backs drop next to the centre-backs and the team becomes a 5-3-2. In midfield, two holding players protect the defense while a playmaker supports the strikers.
