The 4-1-4-1 places a single holding midfielder between the back four and a midfield four, with one striker up front. It is a compact shape that keeps a team organised without the ball.
The holding midfielder sits in front of the centre-backs and covers the space where opposition number 10s like to play. Ahead of them, two central midfielders and two wide midfielders form a line of four, which makes the pitch narrow and hard to play through.
In attack, the two central midfielders push forward and the shape looks like a 4-3-3, with the wide midfielders acting as wingers. Many teams that attack in a 4-3-3 defend in a 4-1-4-1.
Has the holding midfielder as a safe short pass in front of the defense.
Overlap the wide midfielders when the team attacks.
Screened by the holding midfielder, so they can hold a higher line.
The anchor who reads the game, wins the ball and keeps the passing simple.
Two box-to-box midfielders who arrive in the box.
Become wingers in attack and help the full-backs in defense.
Holds up the ball and leads the press.
Often lined up in a 4-1-4-1, famously moving Philipp Lahm from full-back to holding midfield, and won three Bundesliga titles.
Many sides that start in a 4-3-3 drop into a 4-1-4-1 without the ball, with the wingers falling back into midfield.
